We threw beans as part of the Setsubun event. The students listened with interest to the origins of Setsubun and bean throwing, and then, with their energetic voices filled the gymnasium, and shouted, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (Demons out! Good fortune in!), as they threw beans to drive out the demons and bad luck from within their hearts. The event was a great opportunity to experience Japanese traditions.
