This year, Setsubun is on February 3rd. At our school, we held the Setsubun event one day earlier. First, the students learned about the origin and meaning of Setsubun in the home economics room and watched a picture-story show. After that, they threw beans at the preschool playground. The children seemed to be looking forward to seeing the demon, not knowing when it would appear. They put the beans in demon-decorated containers that they had made during the arts and crafts time. Then, they threw the beans, hoping to spend this year in good health and safety from all evils. We could hear their happy voices saying “Out with the devil! In with fortune!” under the blue sky.
