Potato Picking & Rice Threshing

AKS students had a wonderful experience in harvesting potatoes and rice today.

First, students picked potatoes from the school farm. Some of the potatoes were huge and children enjoyed picking them. There were pill bugs, centipedes, spiders, etc in the soil, and it was a good chance to learn about facts related to the science, social studies, and life lessons they have had.

Later on, students and teachers went to the school rice field and threshed rice. They used a threshing tool that people in Edo period used at the time. This is called Senbakoki(千歯扱き). Everybody worked very hard, but could only thresh rice for about 2-3 bowls full. We learned how difficult and tiring it is to thresh rice, and we also felt grateful for the rice we eat everyday.
